
Angelelli presents a project intended for extremely limited production

There are two ways to unveil a new car. The first is to pull off the cover, fire up the engine and let the exhaust note do the talking. The second is to present a project and all its ingredients — 800 bhp, carbon fibre, 3D-printed titanium, Generative Design, advanced aerodynamics — and hope nobody asks that one question: “Yes, but where’s the car?”
Angelelli Automobili has chosen, at least for the time being, the second route.
It is called Project 754 and it is an independent Italian coachbuilt project — meaning a bespoke body built to order — that promises to enter the already crowded territory of ultra-high-performance sports cars. Two versions, two mechanical layouts and an unquestionably ambitious philosophy. On paper, in other words, it has pretty much everything needed to get enthusiasts interested. The only problem is that, for now, paper is precisely where most of it exists.

The idea is nevertheless an interesting one. The 754 R will be developed around a rear-engined architecture, while the 754 M will use a mid-engined configuration, with both starting out from Porsche 911s as donor cars. Angelelli talks of new bodywork, revised proportions, bespoke aerodynamics, specific structural components and a thorough mechanical evolution.
The Project 754 aims to position itself in what is known as the GT2-performance segment, with an indicative output of between 700 and 800 bhp and a declared, almost obsessive focus on reducing weight. Carbon fibre, titanium, lightweight components, optimised suspension and parts produced through additive manufacturing should help turn all that power into something rather more interesting than a simple number printed on a specification sheet.

Another major contribution should come from Generative Design. Angelelli will use its own Alien Mesh Design system to develop components, removing material where it is not needed and retaining only what is necessary for structural function. Suspension components, mounts, linkages, seat structures, steering components and even certain elements of the cabin could therefore take on shapes that would normally make you think a mechanical component had been designed by aliens with a particular passion for biomechanics.
All of this can also be produced using 3D-printed titanium or lightweight alloys. An extremely interesting technology, particularly when it allows geometries to be created that would be impossible — or simply economically nonsensical — using traditional manufacturing processes.
The aerodynamics also promise plenty. The bodywork will be developed as a complete system, with airflow management around the wheels, air extraction from the wheel arches, an aerodynamic floor, rear diffuser and fixed or active aerodynamic elements. The aim is to achieve the right balance between downforce, cooling and aerodynamic drag.
On paper, it is difficult to find anything that is missing.
A project like this is fascinating, but between “we will use” and “we have used” in the automotive industry lies an enormous distance. More or less the same distance that separated Napoleon from Europe on the day before Waterloo. Even greater is the gap between “it could be produced” and “here is the finished car, right in front of you”.
For now, in fact, Angelelli is presenting a project intended for extremely limited production: 25 examples of the 754 R and 25 of the 754 M, each built according to the owner’s requirements and personalised down to the technical, aesthetic and construction details.

If Angelelli manages to turn this enormous list of technologies into a real machine, as promised, then the Project 754 could become something genuinely very interesting. A truly independent Italian car, built in tiny numbers and capable of bringing together craftsmanship and technologies that we would normally expect to find in the R&D departments of major manufacturers.
For now, though, there is no racing helmet or overalls in sight. But in the meantime, we are already impatient to see it.
