Twenty-seven years later, Audi is giving it another go. Only this time, instead of aluminium there is a battery, and instead of an internal-combustion engine there are up to 326 hp delivered by permanent-magnet synchronous motors. What are we talking about? The new Audi A2 e-tron.
Just 4.32 metres long, the new compact from the four rings carries on the legacy of the controversial yet ingenious 1999 Audi A2 – that strange fridge on wheels which, back in the days of the Millennium Bug, looked as though it had arrived straight from the future.

Perhaps the most interesting thing is that the entire car has been engineered with an almost obsessive focus on efficiency, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.24 – bear in mind that the Lotus Emira manages a 0.37. Audi achieved this result through clean surfaces, air curtains, aerodynamic elements inside the wheel arches, a fully clad underbody and even a front air intake that decides for itself when it is time to open.

Inside, the A2 e-tron also seems determined to play in a higher league. The cabin features sophisticated materials and finishes, while sitting in front of the driver is what Audi calls the digital stage, comprising an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a curved 12.8-inch central display.
Naturally, artificial intelligence had to make an appearance. The voice assistant can interact with AI and, through the Audi connected work suite, even handle work-related tasks using Microsoft Outlook and Teams. No more out-of-office messages, because apparently, according to Audi, the best way to unwind on a journey is to join Teams meetings. Was this really necessary?

The range starts at 170 hp and goes all the way up to 326 hp, with battery packs of 52, 61 and 84 kWh. Maximum range reaches 646 km on the WLTP cycle, while the most efficient version promises just 12.8 kWh/100 km. A figure that earns the A2 e-tron the rather curious title of the most efficient Audi ever.
Fast charging is supported at up to 183 kW, while bidirectional charging means the car can not only receive energy, but also send it back out to power external devices.
If you haven't fallen asleep by now, perhaps this is where things get interesting: power outputs of 170, 190, 231 and 326 hp, with all that cavalry sent to the rear wheels. Because yes, Audi has decided that a small urban EV can have enough power to make a mountain road genuinely interesting – and, at this point, I don't know why, but I keep thinking about the Lotus Emira.
The price? €38,350 for the entry-level version. The first A2 e-tron models will arrive at Italian dealerships in January 2027.

Ultimately, the new Audi A2 e-tron seems determined to prove that you can have a proper Audi in compact form. And considering just how much technology they've managed to cram into it, perhaps the only thing that has truly remained small is the parking space you'll need to squeeze it into.
